Exploring the Juvenile Justice Landscape

In the wake of historic juvenile justice reforms, MCYJ sought to hear directly from Michiganders about the juvenile justice system. With support from the Marketing Resource Group, a statewide poll of registered voters was conducted in 2024. This comprehensive poll gauged public opinion on critical issues affecting our youth and families. Overwhelmingly, Michigan communities—rural, urban, and suburban alike—support alternatives to detention, data transparency, and workforce opportunities for our youth.

​​Community-Based Care 

The poll revealed significant support for ensuring that justice-involved youth have access to community-centered care. Respondents underscored the importance of ensuring that funds are used effectively to provide necessary services for children in the juvenile justice system. View the community insights here.

Quality legal representation is a fundamental right, particularly for justice-impacted young people. The poll illuminated the need for legislation that requires equitable juvenile defense to help ensure that young people receive the necessary legal assistance and support throughout the juvenile justice process. Workforce Development

The poll highlighted the need for workforce development programs for youth involved in, or at risk of becoming involved in, the juvenile justice system. Michiganders believe that well-supported workforce programs promote safe communities while providing preventive and rehabilitative care to young people. View the community insights here.

General Juvenile Justice Reform

This comprehensive poll showed strong public support for a juvenile justice system prioritizing community-based programs, increased investment, and transparency. Respondents expressed a desire for a system that focuses on the long-term well-being and successful reintegration of youth back into our communities. View the community insights here
