Voices of Justice
Youth Fellowship Program
The Voices of Justice Youth Fellowship is a leadership program for justice-involved youth ages 16-22. Our fellowship provides the tools, resources, and mentorship to turn personal experiences into powerful advocacy for change.
About the Fellowship
The Voices of Justice Fellowship Program for justice-involved youth offers an opportunity to create lasting change. Through tailored mentorship, comprehensive support, and leadership-focused initiatives, this program amplifies the voices of young individuals navigating the complexities of the juvenile justice system. It provides a platform for self-expression, personal growth, and community engagement. The program aims to amplify youth voices, promote equity, and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

Building the Next Generation of Youth Justice Leaders
The MCYJ Voices of Fellowship launched in 2024 with a bold vision: to equip emerging advocates across Michigan with the knowledge, skills, and community connections to lead meaningful reform in youth justice.
In its first year, the Fellowship brought together a dynamic and diverse cohort of young leaders—each committed to advancing equity, ending harmful system practices, and amplifying youth voice in policy conversations. Fellows participated in specialized training on policy advocacy, storytelling for change, data-informed decision-making, and community engagement.

Year One Highlights
-
7 Fellows from across Michigan, representing communities from Detroit to Grand Rapids to Saginaw.

Positive Evaluation Results
An independent evaluation by Dr. Bianca Nightengale-Lee, Western Michigan University, affirmed the Fellowship’s success in its inaugural year.
According to Dr. Lee’s report:
“MCYJ’s Fellowship is cultivating a powerful pipeline of informed, passionate advocates. Fellows demonstrated measurable growth in leadership confidence, policy knowledge, and their ability to influence systems change.”
Dr. Lee’s evaluation also highlighted:

-
100% of Fellows reported feeling more equipped to take on leadership roles in their communities.
-
90% expressed plans to continue advocacy work beyond the fellowship year.
-
Participants praised the sense of belonging and support, calling the experience “transformative” and “deeply motivating.”

As MCYJ prepares for Year Two, the Fellowship will expand to include new training modules, more learning sessions, and alumni leadership opportunities—continuing our mission to empower youth and young adults to reimagine justice in Michigan.
